Well friends, we’ve been living in Chiang Mai for over three months already! On the outskirts of Chiang Mai actually, in an area called Hang Dong.
We moved up here from Phuket for a number of reasons, one of which is I enrolled in a year long Thai language program at the University of Chiang Mai. I’m loving it so far and my Thai is improving by the day. 🙂
Hang Dong is a calm and unique place. The traffic here is far better than that of the city, and there are less tourists ( although quite a few expats). Our home is nestled between small rice paddies and Baan Tawai, an artists village.
The culture in the North of Thailand is a real contrast to that of the South. The Chinese and muslim influence is less here, and the food therefore reflects the cultures in the region ( such as Lanna and Laos). Although we have found some darn good massaman near us…
One of our favorite things about living in this area are the great ( and extensive) amount of coffee shops. Cheap, good coffee and coconut cake are probably my two favorite things, and this region has both.
And of course, living near so many gorgeous temples is simply magical. I do however miss the Chinese temples in Phuket Town, but the stunning Lanna design here makes me head to the wats every chance I get.
